Unfortunately we all know one thing the UES lacks is hip restaurants and bars that are not packed with graduating college kids. Until now.. Ruairi Curtin has opened his Irish gastropub The Penrose on 2nd Avenue between 82nd and 83rd streets. This is the sister establishment to downtown hot spots The Wren, Wilfie & Nell, and Bua. The crowning jewel of head chef David Mawhinney’s 14-item menu is the spiced beef sandwich which is cured for 40 days, spiced in house for four days, then slow roasted for six hours. To drink, there are cocktails made with Irish whiskey, plus homemade spiked sodas and domestic beers. One of the ales is a Sixpoint Irish Red Amber that’s being developed exclusively for Curtin’s four restaurants. I went with my girlfriend and enjoyed some wine and the the crowd.. Attractive, and great ratio of man to woman… Finally! Highly recommend for a proper cocktail and small bite..
